Aside from proprietary backups, most phones will also allow you to transfer apps and settings. You'll be prompted during setup, and most will require a cable, but it's a good fallback if you don't remember to regularly back up. This may take some time, and it's a good idea to try not to use your phone for anything else while it's running.
